Better Sleep Starts With Small Steps

Evidence-based guidance for people who are tired of being tired.

Sleep problems rarely respond well to effort. The harder most people try to sleep, the worse it gets — because sleep is something that happens when we stop demanding it.

Dr. Handley’s approach to sleep health is built on that recognition. Rather than prescribing elaborate routines or asking people to overhaul their lives, the work starts where people actually are: with small, sustainable changes to the four areas that research consistently shows matter most — your sleep space, your sleep schedule, how you wind down, and how you start your day.

This philosophy is captured in the Tiny Sleep Steps framework, which forms the foundation of his public workshops and individual sleep treatment.

Tiny Sleep Steps Workshop

A practical, evidence-based workshop for anyone who wants to sleep better without medication. Built around CBT-I (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia) principles, the Tiny Sleep Steps workshop walks participants through four domains of sleep health: Sleep Space, Sleep Schedule, Wind Down, and Wake Up Well.

Designed for general audiences — no prior knowledge required. Ideal for community groups, employee wellness programs, and anyone who has tried everything and is ready to try something that actually works.

Why CBT-I — Not Medication

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is the recommended first-line treatment for chronic insomnia — preferred over sleep medication by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the American College of Physicians, and most major sleep health organizations.

Unlike medication, which treats the symptom, CBT-I addresses the behavioral and cognitive patterns that perpetuate insomnia. The results are durable: most people who complete CBT-I maintain their improvements long after treatment ends, without dependence or side effects.

Dr. Handley has specialized in behavioral sleep medicine for more than two decades, applying CBT-I and the Transdiagnostic Sleep and Circadian intervention (TranS-C) in both individual treatment and workshop formats.

Individual Sleep Treatment

For people with more complex or persistent sleep difficulties, individual treatment with Dr. Handley offers a structured, evidence-based path to lasting improvement. Individual sleep treatment typically involves six to eight sessions using CBT-I, tailored to your specific history and sleep patterns.

Dr. Handley’s practice accepts new sleep clients on a limited basis. Telehealth is available for clients in PSYPACT-participating states.
