About Dr. Kevin Handley

Kevin Handley, Ph.D. is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist (Virginia License #0810004580) and PSYPACT credentialed practitioner, meaning he is authorized to provide telehealth services across participating states. He holds a faculty position as Professor of Psychology at Germanna Community College, where he founded and directs the Paraprofessional Counseling Career Studies Certificate program — training the next generation of behavioral health professionals in Virginia.

Dr. Handley maintains a referral-based private practice in the Fredericksburg and Stafford, Virginia area. His clinical work focuses on behavioral sleep medicine, forensic and educational psychological evaluations, and occupational stress — areas where psychology, lived experience, and practical skill-building intersect most meaningfully.

Over a career spanning more than 25 years, he has consulted with healthcare systems, community behavioral health agencies, and court systems across the region. He has contributed to Virginia state legislation establishing the Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) credential, attended the Governor’s bill signing ceremony, and continues to serve in an advisory capacity to the state Senate. He has presented at state and national professional conferences on topics ranging from sleep health to imposter phenomenon to AI in higher education.

His approach to all his work — clinical, academic, and consultative — is grounded in the belief that small, sustainable changes produce lasting results. That philosophy shapes everything from how he structures a therapy session to how he designs a professional development workshop.

How I Work

I work best when people are ready to stop waiting for the big breakthrough and start making the small moves that actually add up. Whether that’s restructuring a sleep schedule, clarifying a vocational direction, or helping an organization build a more sustainable culture of care — the mechanism is the same: identify what’s workable, start there, and build from it.

In clinical work, I draw primarily from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy — frameworks that take both the research and the person seriously. In consulting and training, I bring the same evidence-based sensibility to organizational problems that rarely show up in textbooks but matter enormously in practice.

I believe the best professional development is the kind people actually use on Monday morning. And the best therapy is the kind that makes itself unnecessary.
