Supervision serves a key socialization and gatekeeping function for psychologists, counselors and social workers in training and involves substantial legal and ethical challenges. Many mental health professionals will acknowledge that their graduate education included little or no training in the delivery of supervision.
Traditionally, the norm was that if you were on the receiving end of clinical supervision, then that was training enough to provide effective and ethical supervision. In recent years, the norms have changed. Supervision is now acknowledged as a challenging and serious endeavor that requires as much preparation and training as in any other service provided by psychological, counseling social work professionals
